WHAT IS AN ALDERMAN?
• An Alderman is elected by the electors in each of the 25 Wards in the City of London. They serve for 6 years and can stand for re-election. Electors include both residents and representatives of local businesses.
• An Alderman acts as a full member of the Court of Common Council (the ruling council body of the City of London Corporation) and so will be responsible for all local authority issues.
• Additionally an Alderman is a member of the Court of Aldermen which administers many of the ceremonial matters including those associated with Livery Companies and the office of Sheriff and Lord Mayor.
• Only an Alderman can proceed to become a Sheriff of the City of London and Lord Mayor.
• The role is unpaid and non party political.
